Ameen Waheed, MD, is an American board certified internal medicine and Nephrologist physician practicing in Ft Lauderdale area since 2013.
Dr. Ameen Waheed successfully completed his training in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago/Michael Reese Hospital. During this period he was consistently included among the top presenters at the annual research fair. He was eventually chosen Chief Medical Resident, taking a lead role in administration as well as in teaching the 70 Internal Medicine residents. Following this, he was invited to stay on as teaching faculty and named the Associate Program Director. He played a key role in shaping the academic activities and mentoring the residents. In two successive years, he was awarded the highly coveted “Richard Langdorf Award for the Best Teaching Faculty”, as chosen by his peers.
Dr. Waheed always maintained an active research role during his tenure at Michael Reese Hospital, and joined Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Division of Transplant Nephrology to pursue this. He published in peer reviewed journals such as Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
He practiced Internal Medicine for another 4 years in the greater Chicago area, solidifying his understanding of primary care, which is the basis of his patient-centric practice approach and the empathy he shows to the most vulnerable patients.
Ultimately, he went on to pursue his dream of becoming a nephrologist, and joined one of the top nephrology fellowship training programs in the country. He continued his research interest during fellowship training and authored several scientific papers, which were published in different peer reviewed journals, such as Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, Seminars in Nephrology and Journal of American Society of Nephrology. As a tribute to his academic success and his leadership abilities, he was picked to be the Chief Administrative Nephrology Fellow.
During this period, he also completed Home Dialysis Academy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This highly specialized training helped him attain extensive knowledge in peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis therapies. In addition, he dedicated 6 months of his Nephrology training to be fully trained in lnterventional Nephrology and has successfully performed over 200 angioplasties of AV fistulas, as well as placement of multiple tunneled hemodialysis catheters.
After his fellowship training, he joined The Kidney and Hypertension Group, one of the most prominent Nephrology practices in South Florida. He enjoys practicing Nephrology in the 4 busy out-patient offices, 5 hospitals and various hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis clinics served by the Group. He became a full partner after 2 years with this successful practice. He has been able revive his love for medical education, after being appointed Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami, Holy Cross campus, to teach Nephrology to the Internal Medicine residents.
He continues to collaborate with his peers at the Division of Nephrology at the University of Miami and was recently asked to chair a panel of speakers at their first ever Nephrotic Syndrome Symposium. He was also chosen “Specialist Consultant” of the year by the UM residents at Holy Cross Hospital in 2016-17. In 2019, Dr. Waheed was named a “Top Doctor” in Nephrology by the prestigious Castle-Connelly.
